Missed-call text back for local businesses

The short answer

Missed-call text back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you didn't pick up, so they can tell you what they need by text instead of calling the next business on their list. It usually works with the number your customers already call. In Ben Johnson's 30-day sprint it's often the first fix, live inside a week.

01

How it works

  1. Step 1

    A call goes unanswered

The crew is on a job, the front desk is with someone, or it rings after hours.

  2. Step 2

A text goes out right away

From your business name: sorry we missed you, what do you need? It's written in your words, and you approve it.

  3. Step 3

    The reply reaches your team

On your phone or in a shared inbox, with the caller's number and what they asked for.

  4. Step 4

You call back or they book

Your team picks up the thread, or the caller picks a time from a booking link if you use one.

02

The missed-call math

The starting numbers are placeholders, not industry averages. Type in yours. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

Calls you miss a year 360 before any text goes out
Customers a text back could win back 108 $48,600 a year

The math: calls a month, times 12, times the share you miss, times the share who'd book after a text, times what a customer is worth. In the sprint we measure your real miss rate in week one before promising anything.

03

Who it fits

Home services

HVAC, plumbing, electrical, pest, roofing and pools. Calls ring while everyone's on a job, and after hours the next company on the list is one tap away.

Medical and dental offices

The front desk can't answer the phone while checking someone in. New-patient callers get a text and a way to book.

Law firms

When an intake call goes to voicemail, the next firm's number is on the same search page. A text back keeps the caller talking to you.

Auto repair shops

Techs are under a car and the counter is busy. A text keeps the caller from trying the shop down the road.

  • Carrier registration. Texts sent by software from a regular 10-digit business number have to be registered with U.S. carriers under a program called A2P 10DLC. Twilio, one of the large texting providers, puts it plainly: anyone sending that kind of message to the U.S. must register.1 Unregistered messages carry extra carrier fees. The registration should be in your business name, so the number and its sending history stay yours.
  • Written in your voice. The text should sound like your front desk. You approve every message before it goes live.
  • Somebody owns the replies. A text back only helps if a person picks up the conversation. We decide who, and where the replies land, in week one.

What it costs

Missed-call text back is usually the first fix in my 30-day sprint, which is $2,000 for the five founding spots this fall (two start in November, three in December). I pay for the tools during the sprint, everything is set up in your name, and two more systems go in before day 30. Every sprint comes with a written guarantee, spelled out in the one-page plan I make for your business.
